My Wish List for Hairdressers

“Education is not filling a bucket but lighting a fire”

Last week I created a wish list for salon owners in an effort to help bridge the gap between salon owners and hairdressers.

Today I want to focus on what hairdressers can do to build personal success and get along better with their salon owners. It is my wish  to combat negativity, and in some cases jealousy towards salon owners by some hairdressers. Hopefully this article will combat some of this animosity and the misunderstandings that are prevalent in the industry.

I want to suggest this wish list to the many hard working hairdressers, and in fact, all the hard working beauty industry professionals including: hairdressers, nail techs, estheticians, skin care, and make up artists.

It is my wish that salon owners show a greater effort to better understand the educational and personal growth needs of the team members who work hard in our salons.

If we are to grow as a profession we must join together as a team to try to better understand each others’ personal, professional and financial needs to maintain business stability.

My Wish List for Hairdressers:

A Higher Standard of Living — hairdressers work hard day in and day out and should be rewarded personally, professionally, and financially.

Salon Owners Who Develop Strong Leadership and People Management Skills — if your salon owner works hard to earn your trust and support you must also earn their respect by offering your hard work ethic and salon loyalty. Be a team player, help out when things get rocky and your efforts will not go unnoticed.

Create A Positive and Professional Salon Environment — one of the perks of this profession is that it’s supposed to be fun. But sometimes your salon owner sees more fun and less work which can cause conflict. Have fun when its appropriate to do so, make your customers feel special and you won’t have any problems.

Education and Training — offer yourself up for education and continual training. If you can show your salon owner that you want to learn and grow as a professional they will be more inclined to invest in you and your future in this business. After all, the more you learn, the more they earn.

Mentoring and Guidance — you have a wonderful opportunity to show the other young hairdressers in your salon how a professional stylist looks, acts and works. You get the best of others when you give the best of yourself so lead your peers by example.

More Customers — work hard to market and promote yourself and your salon by consistently providing great service. The one thing that keeps customers coming back time and again is your skills and ability to deliver the style they were looking for. Do this and your job will be more than secure.

Seek Salon Owner Feedback — invite your salon owner to provide you with feedback from time to time. This lets them know you value their opinions and experience. Let them know your door is always open if they need help and support. Create conditions that foster trust and loyalty.

Job Security — work hard to create a great business and insure job security for yourself and your peers.

A Benefits Package — based on performance and productivity, especially health insurance, but only when the business is profitable.

Incentives and Rewards — based on performance and productivity. Rally for an incentive and rewards program for a job well done. Hairdressers must know that salon owners appreciate their hard work and loyalty.

More Income — create value in yourself and create a demand for your services, then raise prices periodically. In this way you should double and triple your income.

I am sure many hairdressers will agree with this wish list. I urge salon owners to work hard to understand the educational needs of your team and make this wish list a reality. But none of this can be possible without profits and without a constant merry-go-round of staff turnover. Let all of us join together, both salon owners and hairdressers, to make this a reality.
